The US Department of Transportation (DOT) currently allows the option of (2) different “Basic Description” formats for Domestic HAZ shipping papers. However, a change is coming based upon DOT’s Docket HM-215I which will harmonize the sequence of the basic description with international requirements as:
Effective January 1, 2013, the below format will be the only acceptable sequence for shipments in transport:
Example: UN1090, Acetone, 3, II
Note: The basic description can be listed either horizontally or vertically.
The following format will no longer be acceptable for HAZ shipments in transport on, or after, January 1, 2013 and would be subject to DOT’s baseline penalties of $500 per shipping paper:
